Flooring a Newly Built Alabama House
The slab under a new Alabama house is still wet, and the air around it is doing nothing to help. Both facts have to be measured rather than assumed, because the warranty on your floor is written in numbers.

Alabama’s building has concentrated hard in a few places. The Huntsville corridor and the
Birmingham suburbs have been going up steadily; the older river and Gulf cities have not.

Madison and Auburn both sit at a 2001 median, so a new build there is the ordinary case. In
Birmingham, with a 1965 median and a quarter of its houses predating 1940, the questions on
the subfloor page matter more than these do.
The slab test, and why it is not optional
Concrete gives up water for months. The test that settles it is ASTM F2170:
probes sealed into holes drilled to 40% of the slab depth, allowed to equilibrate, then read as
relative humidity inside the slab.
- Three tests for the first 1,000 square feet, plus one for each additional
1,000. One probe in a big slab is a sample, not a result. - Manufacturers generally cap acceptance between 75% and 85% RH. Your product’s
own warranty sets the number that counts. - Above the cap: wait, mitigate, or change material. There is no fourth option
that keeps the warranty.
Get the readings on paper. In Alabama this matters more than the standard implies, because a
slab poured in a humid spring dries into air that is barely drier than the concrete.
Why humidity is the Alabama variable
A new house in Alabama spends its final construction weeks full of outdoor air. Flooring
delivered into that acclimates to a humidity the house will never see again once it is being cooled
and dehumidified through a full summer. The boards then shrink, and the result looks like defective
material when it was really a measurement that never happened.
So the sequence matters: HVAC running at the house’s normal operating conditions first, material
delivered second, moisture content checked third, installation last. A stated waiting period is not
a substitute for a reading — what Alabama humidity does to
a wood floor puts numbers on it.
Two things new construction does not exempt you from
Termites. A new slab and a fresh treatment do not make this a solved problem in
Alabama, and the details of how a floor meets a wall can either preserve an inspection path or hide
it. What that means for the subfloor.
Water. If the build is anywhere the Gulf weather reaches, the material decision
should account for what happens after an inch of water rather than only what happens on a normal
