How We Research This Site: Sources and Methodology
This site publishes figures, so it should say where they come from and what they are worth.
What this site is
ALFloors is an independent Alabama flooring resource. We do not sell flooring, we do not install it, we do not quote jobs and we do not pass your details to anyone. There is no phone number and no lead form, because there is nobody here to call you.
The cost estimator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere unless you specifically ask for the result by email.
Housing figures
Every median year built, share of housing predating 1940, share built since 2000 and population figure on this site comes from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, 2020–2024 5-year estimates — tables B25035, B25034 and B01003 — pulled in August 2026 for each city individually. They are not state averages repeated eleven times.
Each city’s Census place code was read back by name before it was used. That check caught a real error during the build: the code first used for Decatur resolves to Daphne, 130 miles away on the coast. It would have produced accurate figures attached to the wrong city.
Termites and inspection
The statement that all of Alabama sits in termite infestation probability Zone 1 — “very heavy” — reflects the U.S. Forest Service zone map used by the residential code, which imposes requirements in very-heavy zones that it does not impose elsewhere. Formosan subterranean termites have been confirmed in at least twelve Alabama counties, with most activity in Mobile and Baldwin.
The description of the Official Alabama Wood Infestation Report as a visual, non-invasive inspection reflects the scope of that document as defined in the Alabama Administrative Code. It is a description of scope, not a criticism of inspectors — the point this site makes is simply that a non-invasive inspection cannot report on decking it never saw.
The figure that a 2% loss of weight can cost a piece of wood up to half its strength is a published wood-science result and is why small amounts of damage matter structurally.
Cost ranges
The installed ranges are planning figures assembled from published national and regional cost data, expressed as wide bands rather than precise numbers. Regional variation is applied to the labor half only, because material prices are national. The most expensive region in the state is the baseline, so no city page ever prints a range wider than the statewide table.
They are estimates for planning. They are not quotes, and no calculator can see your subfloor — which on this site is rather the point.
What we do not do
- We do not invent statistics. Where per-state data does not exist — flooring market share by state, for instance — we say the figure is national rather than dressing it up as local.
- We do not publish reviews, testimonials or project photos from work we have not done.
- We do not claim a team, a history or a service area we do not have.
- We do not tell you your house has a problem. Every page here is about what to ask and what to put in writing, not about what to be afraid of.
Photography
The photographs are licensed stock images of real interiors, credited to their photographers. They illustrate materials and rooms; they are not photographs of Alabama projects and are not presented as such.
